Tutorial: How to make a DVD Video Disc

Click for the full article of "How to Make a DVD-Video Disc."

The HDi-250 records to its internal hard drive, then makes a DVD from the files you select.
It records to the hard disk drive (HDD), then you make a dvd from that or from several files.

How Long Does It Take to Make a DVD disc?
BCD's Dual Stream recording makes HD and SD files simultaneously.  For a 1-hour program, the SD file takes 3 minutes to make a DVD-Video disc.  The HD fileburns in about 9 minutes..

To make a DVD-Video disc, first put a blank DVD disc (+R, -R, or +RW) into the machine

Recording Setup: Press the Menu key and see the Main Menu

MainMenuArrow down to select the file format .VOB. Press Enter and see
the "+" sign, indicating that you have selected .vob files suitable for DVD.
Alternately, choose DualStream for MPEG-2/MP4 and VOB files simultaneously.

You don't have to use 100 machines, but you can!

Multiple Machine Control has long been a specialty of ours, previously with VCRs and now with DVD Recorders.  The BCD DVD-1150 was designed to make it easy to control multiple machines.

The  DVD-1150 has two serial connectors so you can loop the commands through from machine to machine.

 Each unit has its own name (or address) like "DECK 2" and it responds only when spoken to.

You can group the machines, too, so that the command string "GRUP 1;RECS" makes all the machines record at once.

Physical Configuration

DVD Recorder RS-232 USB Ethernet control connectors

Controller-to-Machine Connection:
The DVD-1150 has two identical serial ports wired as DCE.  This means that you use a single straight-through DB-9 cable, Male-Female, from your computer or Crestron®/AMX® controller.  Use either port; it really doesn't matter which for normal operation, but they are labeled for clarity.

Machine-to-Machine Connections:
(Perform the Software Configuration first.)
Use a straight-through Male-Male cable from one machine to another.  Again, use either port (but we like to connect them in some kind of orderly fashion to keep things neat).

Software Configuration:

  • Assign each machine a number.   Connect a machine directly to your computer and establish communications using Windows HyperTerminal or other RS-232 terminal program.
  • For machine #1, type the command
    DECN 1     ( for DECk Number 1).
    While you're there, assign that machine to a Group, too.
    DECK1; GRUP1    (note the semicolon ";" between commands)
  • Type the command "SAVE" and that Deck Number is saved to the DVD Recorder's Flash ROM.
  • Repeat for each machine.

 Multiple Machine Operation:

  • GRUP 1; RECS   makes all the machines record.
  • GRUP 1; STOP   makes all the machines stop.
  • DECK 3; PLAY    makes only deck # 3 play.

DVD-1150 DVD Recorder with RS-232 & USB Control

The DVD-1150 is designed for control via serial commands via RS-232 or USB (acting as a serial port).  For convenience they also have front panel pushbuttons.

The BCD DVD-1150 uses the "BCD1" Command Protocol, the same as used since 1982 and is in current use with BCD's TC-100, SB-100 and VC-16x controllers.  We will update this list from time to time when people have questions.  The full command set is listed in the DVD-1150  Manual.

RS-232 Pinout:  The DB-9 connectors on the DVD-1150 are wired as DCE so a straight-through 9-pin cable (M-F) from your computer will do the job.   On the connectors, Pin 2=TxD, Pin 3= RxD, Pin 5=GND.  The default Baud rate is 19,200 and may be changed and saved under software control.

Commands are 4-characters, terminated by CRLF (Carriage Return Line Feed).   The unit then  sends a prompt character ">" when it is ready to receive another command.
It is important that your control program wait for the ">" prompt before sending a command.

Some commands may have a numeric parameter.

The  MODE and STAT commands do the same thing -- they return the current status of the system.   MODE and STAT can take 3-4 seconds to return a value.  It is important that your routine wait for the ">" prompt after issuing any command.
STAT is a status query that returns a 4-character reply of system status.
MODE is a status query that returns a number.

Common Commands

RECS means RECord Start.  It starts recording.
         STAT=RCRD.  MODE=16

STOP makes it stop.
         STAT=PTHR (pass through) MODE=25

PAUS makes playback or recording PAUSe.
        STAT=STFW (step fwd)  MODE=1

TITL makes it go to the TITLe Menu/Root Menu.
        STAT=TITL   MODE=23

If the unit is already a the TITL mode, the TITL command acts as Resume and the deck resumes playback from where it was interrupted.

PLAY makes it play.
         STAT=PLAY   MODE=10

If the unit is in Pass-Through or Loop-Through mode (video in goes through to video out). PLAY makes it go to the TITLe menu.
If the unit is in PAUSe mode, playback resuumes.

STAT is a query for current transport status.
        STAT returns a 4-character message like STOP, PLAY, RECD

MODE is the same as STAT but returns a 2-digit number.
       Mode 10 is PLAY.  MODE 25 is STOP/PTHR.

TLFT Time Left to record on disc.  Returns H:MM

RLOK Record LOcK.  Default RLOK=1: Requires REC+PLAY front panel buttons to record.     RLOK= 0 permits recording by pressing only the REC button.

FRAM returns the current disc playback position as an integer frame number

FRAM: (note the Colon) returns the current disc playback position in terms of HH:MM:SS

Common STAT & MODE Values

STAT   MODE  DESCRIPTION
OPEN    30   Tray is Open
NDSC    31   No Disc in Tray
INIT    22   During Power-up or after inserting a new disc

Command Execution Times
By some standards, the response of the DVD-1150 is incredibly slow. We take pride, however, in knowing that commands will be accurately executed and that the MODE command returns accurate values. Here are some of our test results.   All times are rounded up to the next second.   Your results may vary, but not by much.

The BCD HDi-250 is a versatile disk-based video recorder designed for industrial, scientific, educational and military video recording.   It's not what most people think of when you say "DVR".   It's not part of a set-top cable box, and it's not a security video recorder.  The HDi-250 answers most of our customers’ requests for features like:

  • Easy-Detect Input Video Format - Composite[NTSC/PAL], HDMI & Component[30 worldwide variants]
  • Fast DVD Making - about 3 minutes
  • High Security User & Supervisor PIN for function lockout
    Prevents unintended operation during remote control

You could think of it as a DVD recorder with a hard drive, or as a hard drive recorder that burns DVD.  Either way, it's one of the most versatile tools you can use.

Compact 1U Rackmount design with removable rack brackets allows for desktop operation.

High Definition Video Resolution is standard with the HDi-250: up to HD1080 (1920 x 1080) in various formats.

Responsive Display messages show status and record setup options as well as playback and disc burn options.

HDi Control is as versatile as HDi recording. All operations are available from front panel pushbuttons and available via TCP/IP commands and optionally, RS-232 serial.

Web control is coming. HDi has a built-in webserver and we're building intuitive applications for recording, playback and disc burning.

Storage Options abound. Among the most popular combinations is a 2.5” removable hard drive and slot-load DVD drive. The removable 2.5” disk ensures complete security and ease of changing media for different assignments

HDi DVD 04a Discs

 Optical Storage: the slot-load DVD drive is preferred by many users to prevent breakage of the tray in a conventional drive. Files can be copied to the DVD disc as files or automatically formatted and recorded as DVD-Video discs. Recordings can also be copied to a network drive or to the front USB port.

Remote Protocol:  The HDi-250 uses the "BCD1" 4-character command protocol, standard with all BCD products since 1982.   Commands like PLAY & STOP are enhanced with disc commands like COPY and BURN.

DVD-1150 Professional DVD Recorder

Discontinued - Special Order Only
Long delays-more expensive

In February 2017 we announced End Of Life for the venerable DVD-1150/1150b.

After evaluating the increasing costs, and the difficulty in obtaining parts that were going obsolete, we elected to discontinue production of the DVD-1150b except for some Military clients.

We will continue to try to produce the DVD-1150b, but in very limited numbers, increased delivery time, at increased cost. Advance payment required.
Inquire for price and delivery times.

  First introduced in 2007, it has been a mainstay for those who needed a reliable, RS-232 controlled, rack mount, professional DVD recorder.  We are shipping only to customers with existing orders and long-term POs.

It is our plan to offer the HDi-250 High Definition Recorder with the capability to record directly to DVD-Video discs, just like the DVD-1150.  Please check this site often for details on this professional DVD recorder, or use our Contact Form to receive email updates.
