At a ordinary auctions, buyers must dig through piles of VHS tapes to play in the VCR/TV combo player. If you want to see the video of a horse, you must...
Find the video tape, Put it into the machine , Rewind it (because the previous person probably didn't), Scan through it to find the right spot.
In the hectic venue of an auction barn, it's a wonder that any video is shown at all. The NRHA knew that there must be a better way to show videos of horses at auctions and at ranches.
Presented as a test installation in 2001, the BCD system was a great success. Producer Shari Ridley of Digital Horse Sales (DHS) was invited by the National Reining Horse Association - NRHA - as well as individual horse owners to return in 2003 with an expanded system. Owners are invited to send videos of their horses to the NRHA with their registration which are forwarded to DHS for DVD conversion prior to the show and sale. In 2003, The NRHA included the service for all consigners of Two-Year Olds.
In addition to previewing the horses before the sale, the discs are used during the sale to show video of each horse in action. The some of the systems use VC-16 controllers and the newer ones use the BCD DVD-C7 Interactive DVD Players. "We chose the DVD-C7 players because BCD puts the controller inside the DVD player for a one-piece installation" said Ridley.
In 2003, the system came into use at the the National Cutting Horse Association, NCHA World Championship Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas.
