Pushbuttons are easy, but they may not always be the best choice for a particular project. Here are some other suggestions from us and our clients...

- Touch two wires together!
Seriously, it's the quickest way to test your connections. One wire is Ground and the others are "Hot", meaning that they are the active conductors. One by one, touch the Ground wire to the other wires to be certain that your controller does what you want. Remember, the BUTS command will show you how each 'button' is assigned.
- Motion Detector
Museums often use PIR (Passive Infrared) motion detectors to switch automatically from the Attract Loop to the main content or to a menu screen. Just be certain that your motion detector is set to "NO" Normally Open so that it will "close" the switch when it becomes active. For alram systems, most PIRs are set to NC or normally closed. That's like holding the button down and releasing it when something happens.
- Laser Pointer
Attach a photo-diode between the Ground wire and one of the Hot wires. The photo-diode only conducucts electricity when light is shining on it. Aim a laser pointer at it... that's the same as presing a button.
- Magnetic Reed Switch
One client has a human anatomy photograph with magnetic reed switches placed at strategic points behind the photo. The "Stethescope" has a magnet in it. When the user places the stethescope/magnet over those places in the photo, it activates the reed switch and plays that DVD video segment.
