Tutorial: How to make a DVD Video Disc

Click for the full article of "How to Make a DVD-Video Disc."

The HDi-250 records to its internal hard drive, then makes a DVD from the files you select.
It records to the hard disk drive (HDD), then you make a dvd from that or from several files.

How Long Does It Take to Make a DVD disc?
BCD's Dual Stream recording makes HD and SD files simultaneously.  For a 1-hour program, the SD file takes 3 minutes to make a DVD-Video disc.  The HD fileburns in about 9 minutes..

To make a DVD-Video disc, first put a blank DVD disc (+R, -R, or +RW) into the machine

Recording Setup: Press the Menu key and see the Main Menu

MainMenuArrow down to select the file format .VOB. Press Enter and see
the "+" sign, indicating that you have selected .vob files suitable for DVD.
Alternately, choose DualStream for MPEG-2/MP4 and VOB files simultaneously.

General Information
  • BCD Control Protocol
This control protocol is BCD Standard: 4-character commands like PLAY, STOP, FIND, and STIL. This is the same protocol used in BCD controllers since 1982 for the VideoLink-232, VIPc, BCD-4000, BCD-5000, BCD-2000A, InterVideo GVR-810, Sanyo GVR-S955, GVR-S960, and BCD AG-2550C.

Each addressable controller is addressed with a DIP switch to assign it a DECK number. This is the same as used in the InterVideo GVR-810 and the BCD AG-2550C. The command

    DECK 7; STIL: 01:37:18:21
causes the seventh VCR to go into still mode at 1 hour, 37 minutes, 18 seconds and 21 frames.

  •
  • Machine Control Protocols
BCD & Sony DVD 9500MD. Nanufacturers have their own ways of communicating via RS-232. RS-232 is an electrical specification, but it does not describe the protocol or language used by the device. The BCD control protocol uses the TYPE x command to tell the SB-100 controller which machine protocol to use to control the target machine.

Interesting note: In reviewing our records, we found that we sell many SB-100 controllers to government agencies and all of the prominent defense contractors and their sub-contrators. They didn't say what they do with them, but they keep ordering more, and we're glad to help. Now that it's somewhat declassified, we can say that the Shadow TUAV is one of the projects.

The TC-100 reads and generates SMPTE Time Code, both VITC Time Code and LTC Time Code. It has an RS-232 interface and Video Superimpose Overlay.

Serial Communications
Single Character Commands for only TC-100a: Simple hookup and single-character ASCII commands make TC-100 easy to integrate into any program. "L" requests LTC frame number. "V" requests VITC frame number. "O" turns on overlay, and "o" turns it off. 'A' causes the TC-100 to output time code numbers continuously. Captioning programs can take advantage of communication rates up to 38,400 bps for fast time code polling..

4-Character Commands for TC-100a and TC-100b: The 4-character command set permits extended 4-character commands for selecting VITC read/write lines, as display size, position and background. A special "VINI" command tells you which lines already have VITC time code.

Data Capture

BCD's TC-100 can record data from an RS-232 source. For monitoring applications that require data to be synchronous with the video, the TC-100 is perfect for recording vehicle speed, heart rate, temperature, and other data.

The TC-100 stores your data in the vertical interval of the video using VITC User Bits or on an audio channel in the LTC Code. Eight user groups are provided, giving you eight hex digits (0-F) for your data. Upon retrieval, you can configure these 'nibbles' as 4 bytes or as one really big number! Data integrity is assurred by writing it four times in each video frame - 2 lines per field. Typical update frequency is 2 to 3 times per second. For more frequent data updates, see our SB-100.
